Совсем забыла рассказать, мы тут недавно нашли очень интересный Японский торт. Его делают так: расскатывают огромные и очень тонкие холсты теста, накручивают на палку как ткань, а потом засовывают в печку и потихоньку заматывают пока не получается торт. Весь процесс происходит прямо на глазах в маленькой bakery. ОООООООООчень вкусненькое изобретение:

Here are the pictures from small fishery village Tai O (Chloe you will love these pictures :))

That's the fish market that has live fish and seafood and all sorts of dried fish and seafood, includying mussels and shrimps:





This women was making the grill of everything that is possibly moves and lives in the ocean:

And finally, we saw again people of the village performing the lion dance with those heads:

Мы сегодня ездили в путешествие на остров Лантау, который находится недалеко от нашего острова. На острове Лантау сидит самый большой уличный Будда, еще там есть монастырь По Линь и маленькая рыбацкая деревушка Тай О.

Вот он Будда, чтобы до него добраться надо поднятся 268 ступенек:



А вот Витька и Будда:



А эти фигурки стоят у подножия Будды и приносят ему всякие вкусности:



С самой высоты открывается классный вид на окресные горы и temples:







А это палки и палочки которые жгут перед входом в храм в монастыре:

One of the big events of during the Lunar New Year is the parade. The parade happens in Tsim Sha Tsui - across Hong Kong island. We have a bunch of pictures from there. So, here few of them.

You often see people performing lion and dragon dance during the celebration of New Year. Traditional Lion Dance is done on the ground, lion dancers eat lettuce for good luck :)



Dancers are dressed as the lions with the big heads:





And here is us watching the lion dance :)

Сегодня наступил большой праздник: Chinese Lunar New Year! So, one day before the celebration, people usually stay at home for the family dinner and then go to the New Year Fair, which is located at a huge stadium with a lot of crap sold: mostly toys and weird sweets. Of course, we bought both:







Today is the first day of the celebration, so there will be a Parade featuring illuminated floats and some local arts performing groups. Unfortunately, we don't have a tickets to this thing, but we'll try to get there anyways.

Traditionally, everyone should get red envelopes with some money in it. Married people are supposed to give those envelopes to kids and teenagers, employers are expected to give them to their workers, etc...

11:40 am - Snake soup
С октября по апрель в Hong Kongе сезон змей, из которых китайцы любят варить суп. На прошлой неделе мы ходили есть змеиный суп в настоящую китайскую лавку расположенную посередине рынка. Лавка представляет собой небольшую комнату где хозяин наливает суп из большой кастрюли, а на улице стоит несколько больших столов за которыми все вместе сидят и причмокивают:








По вкусу змеиный суп напоминает что-то среднее между курицей и грибами. Как сказал мой папа, есть всего несколько видов мяса: свинина, баранина и говядина. Все остальные животные попадают под категорию курица!

3:16 pm - Храм 10000 Будддддд
Мы тут сьездили посмотреть храм 10000 Будд, который на самом деле оказался большей частью кладбищем. То есть, начинается всё очень красиво, примерно вот так:





А потом, когда забираешься наверх, то вся территория ето такие комнаты с яшичками, фотографиями и палочками-вонялочками:





Принято приносить умершим всякую еду: фрукты, суп и даже McDonald's (вместо цветов), и просто ставить около могилы. И обязательно зажигать много палочек.

HKUST is Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It's essentially the MIT/Technion of Hong Kong. Was built just 15 years ago, and it's an extremely nice place. The place is amazing! It stands on the hill of the shorelline and you can see the whole panorama from the library. Here are few pictures:









This university has actually an Econ department (joint with Business School) and there are few people doing Behavioral, Experimental Economics, as well as Game Theory - things that I like. The dean of the department is Israeli (what were the chances :)) and there is another Israeli professor visiting for the semester. I am usually going to this department few times a week to work in the library. When I meet those professors we start speaking Hebrew, and then as soon as they ask me about the research I switch to English :) That's quiet funny. This week I'm going to sit in one graduate Econ class: the first lecture is about the use of Game Theory in Genetics, I have no idea why is it called Economics, but we'll see!

Вернёмся к нашему любимому способу изучать новую культуру - к её кухне! Одна из отличительных особенностей азиатской кухни это традиция готовить и подавать на стол птичек зажаренных с головой. Более того, в крутых китайских ресторанах, шеф повар приносит птичку посмотреть перед тем как начинает её готовить, а птичка смотрит на тебя немного печальным взглядом. Вот так выглядят вывески ресторанов с головами птичек:

Before living in Hong Kong, I've never seen two-storied trams. Two-storied buses - yes, but not the TRAMS! They are very popular here, as all things that are narrow and high, and, therefore, can save some space on the ground.

5:14 pm - Hong Kong soup of the day
Пару дней назад я зашла в китайский ресторанчик около дома чтобы купить lunch. Лавка довольно обычная, абсолютно китайская, хозяин и работники которой наивно считают  что умеют говорить на английском языке, не будем их расстраивать... Ну вот, как обычно lunch состоит из основного блюда (dumplings, or some sort of noodles, or curry, or something else that's hard to identify), супа и чай. Out of curiosity I asked before getting this lunch what is the soup of the day? Китайцы засуетились, и сбивчиво стали произносить что-то на языке похожем по звучанию на английский. Минут через пять я поняла что они говорили: "our soup of the day is Russian Borsch" :) Стоило так далеко ехать!

4:21 pm - ПОПУГАЙ
День памяти прошел на удивление странно: в двенадцать часов ночи недалеко от нашего дома был пойман попугай - настоящий беленький попугай. Поймать мы его решили после того как увидели, что уличная кошка чуть его не съела! Это не обычный волнистый попугайчик, а побольше - породы "коктейль": красивый очень, с оранжевыми щечками и желтенким лбом, похож на панка - на голове перья стоят дыбом.

Наверное надо повесить объявления, что он у нас живет. Но очень хотелось бы, чтобы никто на него не откликнулся и он остался бы у нас жить...
